Our process

We're always looking for talented people of all backgrounds to join our team. Hiring in civil service is methodical with different requirements than the private sector. Our Civil Service Commission and collective bargaining agreements ensure the whole process provides:

  • Fairness
  • Transparency
  • Merit-based hiring system

The City offers a variety of roles. These include appointed and civil service jobs, firefighters and police officers. Hiring for appointed and civil service jobs can take one to two months. We hire police officers and firefighters through academies. That process can take four to six months.

The competition for City jobs is strong. We're proud to use veteran's preference in hiring.

Before you apply

 

  • You need a valid email address to create an account. Our communication with applicants will be only through email. To be safe, make sure to check your spam and junk folders. 
  • Provide your legal name as it appears on your Social Security card. Format your name in upper and lower case letters. 
  • Submit all required documents listed on the job posting. You must do so by the closing date. 
  • Complete your application in full. The City will reject any incomplete applications.

To view the status of your application

  • Log in to NEOGOV
  • Click "Application Status."
  • We will keep you updated on your application status throughout the process.
  • You'll also get status updates by email.
  • You'll still get messages in your NEOGOV account Jobseeker Inbox even after turning off email notifications.
