You must have a license from the City to rent sleeping accommodations for five or more people.

Lodging facilities

  • Are buildings that rent sleeping accommodations for one week or more
  • Must have five or more beds
  • Include fraternity and sorority houses
  • May provide meals to residents

Lodging establishment with food service (boarding) - A lodging establishment where meals are served in a different room than where people sleep.

Sleeping units - Any room used for people to sleep.

Dwelling unit - A set of rooms for living, sleeping, cooking or eating.

Shared Bath units - A bathroom or shower available to several tenants

  • You must have someone in charge of the registry

  • Registry must include:

    • Real name of person renting the room
    • Room number
    • The date and time when they start renting the rooms
  • The registry must be available for a City of Minneapolis staff member to check at any time.
